Case- AF071609 Situation as described by the friend who made the nomination: Disabled 36 year old mother of 3 teens is in hospital and still awaiting disability to be approved. Daughter is working to take care of family. When mom is sent home she has to have a wheelchair ( ins. does not cover) and ramp and a way to transport wheelchair. She also need a chair with arms that she can use in living room and be able to get out of easily. Daughter can't afford driving school to go ahead and get her liscense at 16 years old, but needs it to be able to transport mom and 2 younger brothers and to get back and forth to work without depending on someone else to drive her. Need washer and dryer because they are currently renting one and cannot afford payments of $42/wk. Children are also in desperate need of shoes and back to school clothes. This family is struggling with the mother's declining health and all of the financial stress that comes along with that. The mother has worked even when she physically wasn't able. She battled colon cancer and fought her way through even though she had lost her father to it.
Within the last year and a half she has lost her mother, lost half of her possessions through an abusive relationship, battled cancer, had to stop working due to declining health, was going to be married this june and that was broken off, and so on. We have watched her struggle and know that she has struggled through so much in the past. I would love to see people reach out to her that she doesn't even know and see her experience the love of Christ like never before. She needs the encouragement and the help.
Within ten minutes of sending out the post we have almost every need met.
Three people offer to donate a washer and dryer. We provided her with a stove that was donated. Several people offer to help with clothing for the children including our very own Ms. Greenville county Kristen Rene Smith who also offered to help with finding the electric wheel chair and check into the driving classes with her church. And, Patty has the wood and labor donated to build the ramp which was built Saturday, Aug 1. Local hairdressers in the community donated services to cut and color the mother and childrens hair for school.

Situation in Nominees own words: For the past few years my wife has been hit with one medical condition after another even before I met her. She was diagnosed with cancer at 24 and had it removed and had several radiation treatments. She spends most of her time at the doctors office. She has every kind of specialist you can think of and we will be losing our family heath insurance soon, but we hope to recieve medicaid. She was taken out of work in December of last year and just like everyone else we are struggling. My checks are very small and my job is cutting hours. Her jeep is in need of four good used tires because the wires are showing on hers, an oil change and tune up. She has no air and only three windows roll down. If someone who knows how to work on cars could volunteer to do the work would be great, we will continue to pray about everything else. My wife has amazing faith!I'm doing this for my wife because she wont do it for herself. Though it all she is always putting her needs last and reaching out to help others. I love this about her, but she needs help too.
Tom Kassab of Kascar has replaced the tires and provided the oil change and tune-up free of charge.
A group of Heartstep Volunteers helped an elderly diabetic amputee move into a new apartment. The situation had become desperate due to her fixed income because she was being forced to pay rent on two homes since she was unable to get her things relocated. A big thank you to the volunteers that gave up their Saturday afternoon to make this happen.

Hey guys. I met with this family on FridayJuly 24, 2009. I took an electrician friend of mine with me........terrible situation. The mother of the homes son married a woman 14 years ago she had a 18 month old girl and then they had two of their own children. Both parents abandoned the kids with the grandmother. The children are 16, 13 & 9. Six years later her husband died. The home is a complete mess, including 40 dogs, 10-14 in the house........yes in the house. The children are lovely and seem to be happy. They started this animal rescue and the oldest has created the website to help the animals. The electrician says he can fix the box in the garage. The heating & air has a bad compressor and the unit needs to be replaced. I just found out it is under warranty so we will get that taken care of. The roof is a mess, someone took advantage of her and didn't finish the job.
The clutter, I have two friends that have volunteered to go and spend a day or two with and help her clean up. Oh, the other thing the children will all need is braces. The oldest needs them now. If I can find someone to help her with that the grandmother says she will take her. And one more thing, I plan on getting someone to cut and color her hair, she has let herself go and had moments of crying while I was there.....trying to pick her spirits up a bit.
ASSISTANCE PROVIDED: Roof, electrical and HVAC repair, took the grandmother to have her hair done. Helped her clean and organize the house and we are still working to help with braces.

She also has high blood pressure, and thyroid problems which means she struggles every month to find assistance to have those meds available. An electric wheelchair would be a huge help. Additionallly, assistance with medication would relieve many worries. She currently receives food stamps and HUD housing.

She has the electric scooter, but cannot use it. It is currently in her home and she needs a ramp built so she can leave and enter her home. She draws social security and is not able to have one buit. Donating of the wood would help alot. I see how hard it is for her to get around. It took her a long time to get her scooter. Now that she has it she cannot use it. She is also receiving food stamps.
ASSISTANCE PROVIDED: A person in the community offered to donate a ramp that was previously used by an aunt who has passed away. A church group is currently making contact to disassemble one ramp and move it to this home to meet the need.

We received an email from a Your Carolina viewer who wrote in and said, I have been out of work since last July just after we got married. Anyway, I need to get some dental work
as soon as I can. I have been in pain for a few weeks. I went to two dentist and they said the same thing, that I need a root canal done but since I don't have insurance they can't do anything. I tried to see if I could get medicaid through Spartanburg county and I found out that I would have to be over 65 or have children under 18 years old living with me or be disabled in some way. Of course, I don't have any of those. And that is why I am emailing you and hoping that you might be able to direct me to someone that might be able to help me (us). Just to let you know that we are still looking for work with Benefits of course. I want to thank you so much for taking time to read my email and if you can't help.A big heartfelt thank-you to a local dentist Ashley Cretella of Palmetto Family Dentistry in Anderson. December 2, Dr. Cretella performed a root canal and gave her a permanent filling at no charge.
One life at a time people helping people!

CASE - 060109 - SINGLE MOM w/CANCER- NO INSURANCE Need: The project manager we assigned to this situation has helped her get in touch with the Cancer Society who will provide some of the medications and supplies that are needed during treatment. She is a working mother caring for her 17 year old daughter and her infant grandchild, but with a new round of radiation coming up soon she may be too ill to work for several weeks. She is concerned about paying her rent ($560/month)and electric utility bill. She is currently going through her second round of cancer. She works about 32 hours a week making $7.00 an hour. She has had to take added time off of wor due to her medical condition. She has difficulty battling pain as a reslut of the lymph nodes that are pushing against her nerves. She is facing an intense radiation session on June 30, and we will find out if surgery will be an option following the results of that therapy.
We were able to provide her with dinner for three nights last week. We also got her a gift card for the grocery store. Her grand son did not have any clothes that fit him, so we were able to get him three outfits, and a box of diapers.
She does not have insurance, and the immediate need for medication left her without any money to be able to pay June's rent. July is quickly approaching and she is afraid that on top of all of her other worries, she will be handed an eviction notice if her rent is not caught up. Heartstep paid her current rent and caught her up on the rent monies she was behind.
The Heartstep project manager, Tina Hamilton partnered her up with the Cancer Society, and she will be receiving $100 a month in assistance with medication until medicaid accepts her. We are pretty certain that she will be eligible, it is just a long process, and she is responsible for her own medication until medicaid begins its course. Heartstep has paid one months rent for her so she would not need to be concerned with a place to stay once she returned from a pending surgery.
CASE- ER060109 Need expressed in nominees own words: We heard about you on the radio and wondered if we would qualify for help with our situation. I am currently unemployed. I have been through 10 eye surgeries on both eyes because of an Eye blinding disease called " Macular Edema" I am a graphic artist Illustrator trying to work freelance from my home. You can see how the vision impairment has made my situation desperate. The door was opened by the commission of the Blind to get me these treatments by Laser and injections, if not I would have been totally blind by now. I am slowly recovering. Where I need immediate help is that I have been by God's grace looking for work to support my wife and two small children, Our family van's transmission tore up the bill can be anywhere from $1800 to $2000 At the same time our other vehicle needs about $800 in repair. I was trying to sell it before it tore up as well. The AC in the Van is broken, the AC system in our home broke down $4,500. As well as front door in our home has broken in 3 places. The list goes on. If things were different with my eyes it would be a matter of time w/ a good job that these problems would resolve eventually. But I don't know what to do with out help for these repairs.
ASSISTANCE PROVIDED: One of our volunteers Mark Baily met with the family and he fixed one of the leaks he has in his master bath. He also went over with a seal to fix the toilet. He found someone from his church to help with the kitchen drain problem. Also, he may have a friend who can help with the van we are still working to get a donated vehicle or repair services.
Situation ID# KC102009 - We received an e-mail from someone we know of in the community that has served many years in ministry and is currently in a difficult position after having unexpected health issues and heart surgery. The family is currently facing foreclosure due to being uninsured and facing so many medical bills. The father is unable to obtain full-time employment based on the economy and his current health risks. All they were asking for was food to feed the family. "I honestly do not have food in my house to feed my kids. I have $85 to last me another week and a half until I get my check from my part time job. Is there anyway HeartStep can help provide groceries for us?"
Assistance Provided: The response from the community has been beautiful. We were able to provide this family with $500 in cash donations that were specified for their benefit. We also delivered plenty of groceries and Atlanta Bread Company on Woodruff Road put together several days worth of soups and sandwiches for them. I just received the sweetest thank-you in an e-mail from the father that I will share with you. The extra check you sent was very timely. It kept the bank from repossessing our car. It's amazing how a little bit of money can have such an impact on corporate America. Please tell everyone that we are very thankful for the help. The kids were like "wow." Anytime they can get Atlanta Bread Company they think it's the bomb. Plus all the other stuff will help tremendously. Being in this situation is very humbling but with the support of friends like this in the community and realizing that God is in control is very comforting.
"Several months back we had posted a need for a single mom who had been a victim of domestic violence. She had left her home with her small children and had nothing but what they were wearing. Many of you responded and we were able to deliver furniture, clothing and food to help her get started.
One very special lady by the name of Amy Watson contacted me during that time and shared that her son had past away in 2006 and ever since she started helping a family each year in honor of her son. She sets up a Christmas tree which is called Jefferys tree.
She was contacting me because this year she wanted the family to be the young lady with her two children, we had posted.
She has just written me the letter you will find below: (the K represents the young ladies name which we are keeping anonymous)
You were able to put me in touch with K and we have put together a wonderful Christmas for her and her children. Our drop-in for gift collection was this past weekend and it was a huge success! Thank you so much for helping with this connection. We are so blessed to know K and to be a part of her Christmas. We will be delivering her gifts this weekend. I've attached a photo of Jeffrey's special tree and all of their gifts. This is a blessing all the way around and truly honors the memory of my son and his giving spirit. I'm so very proud" ~
Amy Watson
